DEI Cultural Event 2023

The Center Moriches School District held its inaugural DEI Cultural Event on May 16, 2023. This event was the culmination of months of planning and preparation by the DEI Committee members, led by chairperson Dr. Ricardo Soto. Visitors to the event were treated to “Cultures Around the World” that allowed them to learn about the history, traditions, language, and various cultural elements from regions around the world.

Clayton Huey Elementary served as the hub of international travel for our attendees. Classrooms were turned into “embassies” representing countries such as Japan, Brazil, and Nigeria. The “tourists” were given a travel magazine and a passport to keep track of what countries they visited.

Students and teachers created beautiful displays depicting the cultures of each country. They also had activities, games, or demonstrations for tourists to enjoy and experience what each county has to offer. The event also included performances from the Center Moriches Music Department, the Unkechaug Nation, and the Drama Club. Finally, a selection of food trucks provided tourists a chance to sample cuisine from around the world.

It was a great event that was enjoyed by approximately 1,300 visitors. We hope to see everyone next year!
