Over the last
several years, the Center Moriches School District
has made tremendous strides, academically,
artistically, athletically and altruistically. As
you can see, our focus has been on what we
consider the four primary tenants of a well
rounded educational program.
Academically, we
have worked diligently to increase student
achievement at all levels both in the classroom
and on standardized assessments. To that end we
have been working on all of our classroom programs
conducting item analysis of standardized
assessments and analyzing learning conferences
with students. As this process
unfolds, we determine where our academic program
may be misaligned. That is, teachers maintaining
different expectations for student achievement
from class to class, grade to grade and school to
school. Then teachers begin the process of working
together determining what we expect students to
know, be able to do and be able to use beyond the
situational classroom. Once common proficiency's
were determined, they were recorded and used to
drive the development of common assessments and
scoring rubrics. In addition, common benchmark
assessments were administered at regular
intervals. Simultaneously, teachers were engaged
in professional development related to shifting
classroom practices to support student
achievement.
The primary question driving this process was,
"What do we do when a student does not progress
academically?" The support effort is not left to
chance. A school-wide, systematic support system
is in place that is delivered to students in need,
the delivery of which is not optional. That is,
students are expected to participate.
As a
result of the above, student achievement has
skyrocketed. Below is a
