Center Moriches School District - News Feed http://cmschools.org Copyright 2024 Syntax Communications STEM Day Clayton Huey Elementary School students visited Center Moriches High School to collaborate with the Science Honor Society for STEM Day on March 26. Fourth and fifth graders rotated through several hands-on stations led by high school students, focusing on the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Stations included Play-Doh making, building solar eclipse models, constructing kaleidoscopes and sound experiments. Additionally, the high school robotics team was on hand to demonstrate how its robot works – a station that seemed to be a crowd favorite. “My favorite part about STEM Day was the robot and I liked how cool it was and I liked watching throw it into the targets,” said fifth grader Brayden M. The annual event is an exciting learning opportunity for elementary and high school students alike. ““It was interesting, at least for me and I’m assuming the rest of the high schoolers, to take what they know and what they’re learning in school and find a way to translate that to elementary schoolers. It was just a great opportunity for everyone,” said senior and Science Honor Society member Alexander Babzien. Click here to view the photo slideshow. During the Elevator Pitch Event, groups of students received information about a representative(s)’ company and select students from each group gave a sales pitch on the product to the entire class. Additionally, the sophomores further tested their newly acquired skills by pitching a random object, such as a rubber ducky, a cup or a wacky toy. Awards were then given to students with the most spirited, best crowd pleasing and top sales pitches. The event is part of the district’s school-to-community partnership which brings together students, community leaders, educators and parents. The proposal, which is reduced in scope and cost from the bond proposed in October 2023, comes after months long discussion and community feedback. Voters will cast their ballots on the referendum on March 19, 2024, from 7 a.m.-9 p.m., in the Clayton Huey Elementary School’s Main Street Gym. “Following the defeat of our October bond, the district engaged the community with a Thought Exchange survey, to reflect upon the needs of our schools and identify those areas our residents felt were the key priorities for our facilities,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ronald M. Masera. “That work, coupled with our internal discussions and review, resulted in a revised capital improvement proposal that focuses on the immediate infrastructure needs of the district to maintain health and safety in all buildings for all students and staff.” The proposal includes such items as security updates, boiler replacement, asbestos abatement, American Disabilities Act Compliance work, as well as repairs to broken/cracked sidewalk and asphalt at Clayton Huey Elementary School. In addition, projects slated for the middle school and high school include sidewalk and asphalt repairs, auditorium renovation, roof replacement, boiler and storge tank replacement, security upgrades, window/wall replacement, outdoor track replacement and further interior renovations related to health and safety. If approved, the project is expected to be completed within 2-3 years, depending upon approval by the New York State Education Department. All proposed projects are eligible to receive New York State building aid reimbursement, which for the district is 78%. This means, that the cost impact on the district is $0.22 cents on the dollar to complete all projects. The Sustainable Libraries Initiative was a project created by members of the New York Library Association to acknowledge the role libraries have in larger community discussions about climate change and sustainable futures. Its certification program recognizes librarians who are committed to increasing environmental stewardship, economic feasibility and social equity within their communities. Ms. Bredes went through a comprehensive process to attain the certification. She worked through five categories – community involvement, leading beyond the library, social equity and resiliency, standards and curriculum and collections. “Achieving the Sustainable Libraries Certification has inspired me to continue to expand the library program for our students in new and creative ways,” Ms. Bredes said. “I intend to continue to innovate in order to provide resources and services to best meet the needs of the students at the Center Moriches middle and high schools.” Ms. Bredes is one of only nine school librarians in New York State to complete the certification program. Within their fashion unit, students studied draping and were tasked with working in small groups to create an outfit. They stepped into the library makerspace to assemble their pieces. Many sixth graders used fabric to create their clothing, whereas others used common materials such as newspapers. Once in the library, students used Book Creator to design their own fashion look-books. Book Creator is a platform that gives students the opportunity to create digital content. Students organized their look-books and even included a statement about their collections. This interdisciplinary project brought together a family and consumer science unit with the resources available in the middle school library. Senior class president Noelle Jordan led the Pledge of Allegiance before the Symphonic Band performed the National Anthem. Following the performance, several speakers delivered congratulatory remarks including Board of Education president George Maxwell and vice president Danielle Dench. Class president Noelle Jordan returned to the podium to reflect on the class’ journey at Center Moriches High School. Additionally, Center Moriches High School graduate Hannah Slifstein spoke to the seniors and offered advice for the future. One of the top academic leaders of the class, salutatorian Emma Morris addressed her peers, reminding them the importance of teamwork and encouraging them to cherish connections as they move forward. “There are those without a team. Reach out, include those you think would benefit. Add new members to your team and join new teams yourself. We are all only as strong as our connection to others,” she said. Senior student-musicians then joined the Symphonic Band for a brief musical tribute. They played “Prairie Dances,” as Mrs. Mangogna noted it would be their last time performing as a high school student. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ronald Masera congratulated the soon-to-be graduates before class valedictorian Jillian Ryan took the stage. Jillian summarized all of the positive change her peers have made through their involvement in community fundraisers and charities. She urged the Class of 2023 to continue to make change in their future endeavors. “We already know how to make a difference because we already have,” Jillian said. “But why should we stop here? Let’s keep using this opportunity of life to break down barriers, to create change in areas we are passionate about and to make our lives and the lives of others that much better.” Mrs. Mangogna recognized the individual achievements of members of the graduating class before they walked across the stage to accept their diplomas from the Board of Education. After students returned to their seats, they turned their tassels and tossed their caps into the air, signaling the end of their time at Center Moriches High School. The club, made up of fourth and fifth graders, encourages students to learn how to write their own music. Club adviser Mrs. Basile guided students through writing their own songs with lyrics, different rhythms and pitches. Leading up to the performance, students worked alone or in small groups to write their songs. They gave each other constructive feedback and helped each other prepare to share their music in front of an audience. “We here at Clayton Huey talk about being risk-takers” said Mrs. Basile. “I don’t know anything riskier than learning something new and sharing your new skill with others.” This marked the first year of the Young Composers Club at the building. This latest designation makes the Center Moriches School District the first public school district on Long Island to have a full, K-12 IB continuum. “Receiving the Primary Years Programme authorization is a great accomplishment for our entire school community” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ron Masera said. “It closes the loop for us, as we are the first public school district on Long Island to offer the full continuum of International Baccalaureate in all of our schools. This ensures that every student who enters the Center Moriches Schools will benefit from a high-quality IB Education.” The IB Primary Years Programme at Clayton Huey Elementary School is a student-centered approach. The framework of the program emphasizes self-efficacy and encourages students to be agents of their own learning. It highlights building relationships to grow a strong learning community that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant. Becoming an IB World School has been a years-long journey for Clayton Huey Elementary School. Administrators, teachers and students all played a vital role in receiving this honorable designation. “We at Clayton Huey Elementary School are extremely proud of the hard work that our teachers and students have put in to achieve this prestigious milestone,” Principal Dennis Ricci said. “The benefits of the program are already tangible within our building and has created many opportunities for our students to take action in their learning. As we continue this journey, we are very excited to see how our students use their voice and take ownership in their learning achievements and successes.” The IB program provides the framework to ensure Center Moriches students receive a 21st century education that will prepare them for college and careers. The fully implemented Primary Years Programme lays the foundation at the elementary level to create lifelong learners. “In Center Moriches we embrace the notion that we are a small town, with deep roots and a global mindset!” Dr. Masera said. On March 6, the building’s Greek Festival brought together all aspects of ancient Greek culture while connecting to the social studies curriculum. Ahead of the festival, sixth grade family and consumer science classes collaborated with librarian Ms. Bredes to create ancient Greek-style clothing. Students used newspapers and recycled materials in the makerspace to bring their designs to life. The clothing was displayed in a fashion station at the Greek Festival. During the festival, students participated in a number of stations that connected many different disciplines. They participated in a living museum, several games and even enjoyed a Greek meal for lunch. The annual event helps students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom while bringing together the sixth grade class. We were informed of Kate’s passing this morning as she lost her battle with cancer Friday evening. As a dedicated teacher for the past 23 years in the Center Moriches School District, Mrs. Adams will be fondly remembered for her warmth, her friendship, dedication to students, her humor, and her indelible smile that can melt the hearts of all that had the pleasure of knowing her. This is a very difficult time for her family, our staff, and students. We know the entire Center Moriches community joins us in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the entire Adams family. Please be assured that our counseling and mental health staff will be available to support students and staff. In addition, there are resources on the District website to assist parents in speaking to children about death and grieving. In the near future, the Center Moriches staff will be working on ways to remember and celebrate the life of Kate Adams and her many contributions to our community. Correspondence will be sent from our building principal, Mr. Ricci, and the elementary staff to the community regarding upcoming events. Kate Adams and her family will remain in our thoughts and prayers. Respectfully, The Center Moriches Board of Education and Administrative Team 13 de febrero de 2021 Estimadas familias de Center Moriches, Es con un gran pesar que tenemos que informar a la comunidad del fallecimiento de una de nuestras queridas maestras de primaria, la Sra. In the interest of the health and safety of our students and staff, the Center Moriches School District decided to proactively test our water supply and systems to ensure that our schools contain safe water. Although lead testing was not mandated at this time, in early June 2016, the district contacted Enviroscience Consultants and requested an evaluation of the lead levels in our water systems. On September 6, 2016, New York State passed legislation that mandated lead testing for all water systems in schools. Although the district had completed a significant part of the testing required in the legislation, the district contacted Enviroscience to complete the balance of the testing, to ensure compliance and safety as prescribed in the new law. Enviroscience technicians collected a total of261 samples from water fixtures throughout our district. These samples of water were tested and analyzed according to the guidelines and procedures outlined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the NY State Department of Health (NYSDOH). We received the final results in early November 2016. (See attached report.) The identified fixtures were immediately taken off-line and a remediation was enacted. All remediation measures are in compliance with the NYS regulation. It should be noted that all of our drinking fountains were deemed safe for consumption. As regulations evolve, the District will adhere to any new federal, state or local legislation pertaining to lead testing, analysis and remediation. Additionally, we will work closely with experts in the field, including our vendor, Enviroscience and take appropriate measures to maintain safe water systems. The Center Moriches School District is committed to protecting the health of our students and staff, and will continue to inform the community as we move forward in this important process. http://cmschools.org/News/Story.aspx?id=126057 Wed, 01 Jun 2016 04:00:00 GMT false126057
