Students at Clayton Huey Elementary School in Center Moriches took part in a dynamic cultural learning event designed to deepen their understanding of Indigenous traditions, history, and creativity. The program, on November 21, featured a special Song and Dance presentation by members of the Unkechaug Nation, followed by a 4th-grade student showcase of model Indigenous homes.

The Unkechaug Nation, whose ancestral lands include the Poospatuck Reservation in Mastic, brought their rich cultural heritage directly to the school community through traditional songs, dances, and storytelling. Students had the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the Nation’s customs and traditions, fostering cultural appreciation.

Following the presentation, 4th-grade students showed off their own creative projects, model longhouses and wigwams built using natural and classroom materials. Students researched the structures and constructed models that reflect the architectural styles and purposes, which they displayed to the entire school. The activity encouraged collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

“We are honored to welcome members of the Unkechaug Nation to our school,” said Dr. Nicole Fernandez, principal of Clayton Huey Elementary School. “Experiences like this help our students build meaningful connections to the history and cultures that shape our region.”

Together, the presentations highlight Clayton Huey Elementary School’s dedication to providing students with immersive and inclusive learning opportunities that celebrate cultural diversity and community partnerships.
