Clayton Huey Celebrates Reading with W.A.R.M. Week
In celebration of Read Across America Day—and the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss—Clayton Huey Elementary School in Center Moriches took part in a weeklong literacy celebration known as W.A.R.M. Week (We Are Reading More) from March 2–6.
Throughout the week, students participated in themed spirit days, daily reading activities, and special literacy events designed to encourage a love of reading. Each day featured a different theme connected to beloved stories, beginning Monday with Hat Day in honor of The Cat in the Hat, during which students wore their favorite hats in honor of Dr. Seuss’s classic tale. Tuesday was Literacy Shirt Day, inspired by Dr. Seuss’s ABC, with students wearing shirts featuring words or messages that others could read.
On Wednesday, students enjoyed Cozy Reading Day by dressing in comfortable clothing while settling in with a good book. Thursday’s theme, Read to Your Pet (Stuffed Animal) Day, was inspired by What Pet Should I Get?, and students brought a stuffed animal from home to read to during the school day. The week concluded on Friday with Book Character Day, when students dressed as their favorite literary characters or wore clothing featuring characters from beloved stories.
Classrooms also held D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time each day, where students paused their regular schedules to enjoy independent or shared reading in fun and creative ways. Students read in a variety of settings throughout the building, from hallways and classroom floors to reading with friends, stuffed animals, and even with the lights off.
A highlight of the week was a special author visit from children’s author Alyssa Capucilli, best known for the popular Biscuit book series. Students had the opportunity to learn about the writing process and celebrate storytelling with the author during an assembly on Thursday.
Students also participated in a Little/Big Reading Day, where classes paired up so older and younger students could read together and share their favorite books. Throughout the week, teachers and staff encouraged students to explore new books, share stories, and celebrate the joy of reading together.
