A Reflection on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 by the Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our nation experienced a tragedy that changed the course of history and touched the lives of every American, including members of our own Center Moriches community. As we mark this solemn milestone, we reflect on that day, honor those we lost, and reaffirm the values of unity, compassion, and resilience that have carried us forward since.

We remember the lives forever changed and lost, and the extraordinary courage and selflessness shown in the face of unimaginable tragedy. We pay respects to the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation, the passengers and crew who acted with remarkable bravery, and the thousands of families whose lives were forever altered in a single morning.

In recognition of this anniversary, our District will observe a moment of silence across all three of our buildings. We ask our students, staff, and families to pause and reflect, acknowledging the four strikes that occurred at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and 10:02, the moments that marked the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history.

We honor the 2,977 lives lost during the attacks, and we hold in our hearts the thousands more who have since passed away from illnesses related to their exposure that day. Their stories remind us that the impact of September 11th did not end that morning, but continued to unfold in the years that followed.

The Center Moriches community continues to carry that spirit forward, ensuring that we remember and honor the legacy of those we lost. It is a legacy built not only on grief, but on the countless acts of kindness and solidarity that emerged in the days, months, and years that followed. 

As we come together to reflect on this anniversary, we encourage everyone to speak with our children about the significance of this day, helping them understand not only the tragedy that occurred, but also the resilience and hope that rose from it.
